Freshmen Lead UNT In Opening Round

AUSTIN – After a quick, two-day break, the UNT women's golf team was back in competition on Friday, opening up the Betsy Rawls Invitational at the UT Golf Club.

Two freshmen led the way for the Mean Green against a loaded field, featuring nine top-50 teams, including top-ranked Alabama.

Newcomers Patricia Sinolungan and Audrey Tan each carded a 7-over-par 79 to open the three-day tournament and are in a tie for 50th place, while teammates Lauren Cox and Sabina Pena each shot 80s to tie for 57th.

"We certainly could have done better today," UNT coach Michael Akers said. "The conditions were extremely difficult. Teeing off in the final group hurt us, as the fairways became water-soaked as the rain continued throughout the day."

As a team, UNT is in 13th after the opening round but still within range of the top half of the field with 36 holes remaining.

UNT will tee off from Hole 10 at 8:15 a.m., Saturday, as the Mean Green will look to climb the leaderboard. Fans can follow live on, and find more information on the Betsy Rawls Invitational here.

"We look forward to another opportunity tomorrow," Akers said. "We are in striking distance to move up the leaderboard. The field is extremely good, so every shot counts. Wins against teams in this tournament are huge for our rankings."
