DENTON – The North Texas volleyball team added two new signees on Division-I signing day from the class of 2019.
Both are local products, from the Dallas-Forth Worth metro area. Alysha Johnson, a middle blocker, joins from Mansfield, TX. Johnson will graduate from Lake Ridge High School, and plays her club ball with Summit.
Johnson was 2nd team All-District while also picking up a Defensive Player of the Year award in District 7-6A. She helped lead Lake Ridge to a second round appearance against Byron Nelson in the 2018 Volleyball State Championships – 6A Regions 1 & 3 tournament. She was also named to the Texas Girls Coaches Association All-Star Alternate Team.
"I love Alysha's athleticism," head coach Andrew Palileo
said. "She has high upside as a middle but she will also have the opportunity to play some on the pins. She will bring her high academic standards to our program. Can't wait to start working with her on the court."
Avery McCrillis from Rockwall joins as an outside. McCrillis will graduate from Rockwall High School and join the Mean Green. A varsity captain this season, she helped lead the Rockwall Yellow Jackets to a 9-2 district mark, bowing out of the playoffs in the second round against Plano.
She was top five in aces on her team her junior year. It marked a pattern of improvement as she was named the most improved varsity player her sophomore year after winning most outstanding freshman.
McCrillis was named to the D-FW Area Dallas Morning News Honor list while also being a member of Student Council and PALS.
"We are excited to have Avery join our family," Palileo said. "She is a high character person that will add positively to our culture. She will add depth to our outside positions. I'm looking forward to training with her in the fall."
North Texas' newest athletes are set to join the team in summer to begin preparation for the Fall season. The Mean Green will face Wichita State for a second time this year. North Texas dropped the only match-up between the two program this season 3-0 on September 14. The Mean Green will get a chance at the Shockers again on Saturday Nov. 24 at 2 p.m.
