SURPRISE, Arizona — The Mean Green tennis team's Tamuna Kutubidze and Maria Kononvoa continue to impress and show why they are on of the top doubles teams in the country.
On Wednesday, Kutubidze and Kononova defeated the No. 24 ranked doubles team in the nation, 7-5, 6-1, in the first round of the Intercollegiate Tennis Association's Fall Nationals to advance to the round of 16.
They are the first Mean Green doubles team reach the round of 16.
"The first match is always a challenge," said head North Texas tennis coach Sujay Lama. "But Tamuna and Maria were clinical in their execution today. They let a 4-0 lead slip in the first set but did not get down at all. It was definitely a sign of maturity and experience."
This is the second year in a row Kutubidze and Kononova have made the ITA Fall Nationals but this time they opened the tournament with a win. Both said before the tournament that they felt their experience would help them greatly this year.
Wednesday's win came against a Oklahoma State doubles team that features Sofia Blanco who has at one point held a International Tennis Federation world ranking in the top 500.
Kutubidze and Kononova will face California's Anna Bright and Jasie Dunk in the the round of 16 on Thursday at a time to be announced later.
"Our goal is to get a little better each day and enjoy every moment," Lama said.
