WBB Conference USA Preview

DENTON - North Texas is slated to finish seventh this season in the 14-team league by a vote among the C-USA head coaches, and redshirt senior guard Terriell Bradley was named to the Preseason Team following her First Team selection in 2017-18.
 
In the preseason poll, the Mean Green were slotted behind favorite UAB (eight first place votes), Rice (five votes), Middle Tennessee (one vote), WKU, Charlotte, and LA Tech. Southern Miss, Florida Atlantic, UTEP, Old Dominion, UTSA, Marshall, and FIU rounded out the voting. 
 
Erica Ogwumike of Rice was chosen as the C-USA Preseason Player of the Year. Laia Raventós (Charlotte), Kierra Anthony (LA Tech), Alex Johnson (MTSU), Shonte Hailes (Southern Miss), Deanna Kuzmanic (UAB), and Rachael Childress (UAB) join Bradley and Ogwumike on the Preseason Team.
 
The Mean Green totaled six wins in Conference USA play last season and advanced to the conference tournament semifinal for the first time since 2001-02 when head coach Jalie Mitchell was a senior on the North Texas squad.
 
At Least Nine
Preseason favorite UAB (12-1) leads the league while Rice (9-3), ODU (9-3), and MTSU (9-4) have accumulated nine victories in the preseason. UAB's Kumanic and Katelynn Thomas have each garnered Player of the Week accolades, while Johnson of MTSU has been awarded once this season. Ogwumike of Rice leads the conference in rebounds (11.2/game), Johnson posts the best field goal percentage (.636), and Miyah Barnes of UAB is first in assists (5.6/game) and assist-to-turnover ratio (3.3). 
 
A Trio with Eight
Charlotte (8-4), Southern Miss (8-5), and LA Tech (8-5) have each posted eight wins so far in 2018-19. Anthony of LA Tech currently holds the scoring designation with an average of 23.1 points and has twice been named Player of the Week. 
 
In the Middle
The Mean Green (7-5) closed the nonconference slate with three victories and winners of five of their past six contests. Bradley enters conference play ranking second in points per game (19.5). Sophomore point guard Trena Mims is positioned second in assist-to-turnover ratio (2.32) and eighth in assists per game (3.7), while junior post Anisha George sits fourth in blocks per game (1.3) and ninth in rebounds (6.9).
 
Below .500
Marshall (6-7), WKU (5-8), and UTSA (5-7) sit in the bottom half of the standings. Marshall's Taylor Porter was voted Player of the Week Dec. 10, and Ashley Saintigene's 1.9 blocks per game are tops in C-USA. Dee Givens of WKU posts 3.0 steals per contest for top honors.
 
The Final Three
FIU (3-10), UTEP (3-10), and Florida Atlantic (3-10) round out the 14-team league.
