Tennis Looks To Secure Another Winning Season At Home On Saturday

March 30, 2018

DENTON — The North Texas tennis team will host Memphis at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday at the Mean Green's Waranch Tennis Complex.

In addition to the match, Saturday will be Family Fun Day. Fans are encouraged to bring their families, as there will be bar-b-que hamburgers and hot dogs, autographs from the Mean Green tennis players and inflatables for children. Admission to Saturday's tennis match is free.

UNT (7-10) enters Saturday's match with a 5-3 home record. With just two remaining home matches, they are one home win shy of securing its 11th winning-record at home in the last 12 years.

The Mean Green have had recent success against the Memphis Tigers (11-7), beating them each of the previous two seasons, including a 4-1 win last year in Memphis.

Saturday's matchup against the Tigers will be a rematch of what was one of North Texas' most gritty and resilient performances last season.

After losing the doubles point, UNT bounced back and won four straight singles matches to claim the victory. Led by a dominating performance from then sophomore Tamuna Kutubidze, the Mean Green completely flipped the script and took all the momentum early the match with quick singles victories at No. 2 and No. 5. With everything going North Texas' way, then freshman Alexandra Heczey finished off the Tigers to clinch the match. Also in that match, Maria Kononova set the school-record for most dual match singles wins.

All four Mean Green players who picked up wins last season versus Memphis are still on the roster and are expected to compete Saturday.

A key for North Texas picking up a win Saturday will be getting production out of the bottom half of its lineup. UNT's top-half of its lineup has cruised to a .642 winning percentage and led the team to some big wins this season.
