Khaw, Pena Lead UNT On Day One Of C-USA's

April 16, 2018

FORT MYERS, Florida - Senior Nyca Khaw and junior Sabina Pena led the way for the Mean Green on day one of the Conference USA Championships Monday, finishing the first round of action at three-over-par in a tie for 12th place individually.

The Mean Green sit in seventh place at 18-over-par, four shots behind both Marshall and Western Kentucky, who are tied for fifth. UT San Antonio is the leader after round one, as the team fired a 294 to finish six-over. Just two teams finished under 300 Monday.

"You cannot win a golf tournament during round one but you can lose it," head coach Michael Akers said. "We are in good shape and need to play well tomorrow and move up the leader board."

Khaw had a strong day in her final C-USA Championship, birdieing on three occasions, back-to-back on No. 8 and No. 9, and again on No. 15. She also parred 10 holes. Were it not for a double bogey on the 11th hole, Khaw would have been inside the top five.

Pena was consistent as well, in line with her recent form, also posting a three-over 75. Like Khaw, Pena birdied three times, on No. 8, No. 13 and No. 18 to help finish her back nine at even-par. A pair of doubles on the ninth and 14th holes caused the junior some trouble, however, 11 pars helped keep her in the hunt.

"I am very proud of the way Sabina fought through an illness today and posted a score," Akers said. "We are looking for players with grit and she displayed a great deal of that today. Nyca also had a solid round. I expect us to pick it up tomorrow and for someone to go low in round two."

Despite a difficult day, specifically on the front nine, sophomore Elena Kim eagled No. 15 during her round and closed with a one-over showing on the back nine.

The second round tees off Tuesday morning beginning at 7 a.m. CT from the Old Orange course at the Verandah Club. Follow along with live scoring, courtesy of Golfstat.
