Mean Green Close Bruzzy At Maridoe Strong

April 3, 2018

CARROLLTON, Texas -- North Texas made the largest jump on the final day of the inaugural Bruzzy at Maridoe.

The Mean Green jumped up three spots in the standings on Tuesday by carding a 28-over-par for the day and finishing in ninth place of the 15-team event that featured six schools ranked in the top 50.

"I am very pleased with the way the team fought through exceptionally difficult conditions during the final round of our event," head coach Michael Akers said. "Sabina [Pena] has stepped up the past two events and that is a good sign. We look forward to the Conference USA Championship and hoping all the players play consistently."

Junior Sabina Pena led the way for the Mean Green and was the team's most consistent golfer over the
two-day event. Pena placed in 11th by shooting an 11-over-par over the three rounds and a five over par on the final day.

Pena started the tournament on a high note by carding an even-par 72 in the first round and finished the round in a tie for second-place. She hovered around the top 10 for the rest of the event, which the Mean Green hosted.

"The tournament itself was amazing," Akers said. "I received many compliments from the players, coaches and parents. Our event is about the student-athlete and giving them an experience they will remember. My assistant coach played at Oregon for four years and she was very impressed by what we did for the participants. She told me she never received anything even close. I am very proud of what we accomplished this week."

UNT's Sol Lee made one of the largest individual jumps on the final day, which was filled with gusty winds and a 45-minute lightning and rain delay. Lee moved up 16 spots in the standings by shooting two birdies to finish with a score of 77 (+5) on Tuesday and place in a tie for 34th -- the second highest on the team.
