DENTON - Freshman pitcher Hope Trautwein was named the Conference USA Co-Pitcher of the Week, as announced by the league office Monday. She becomes the second first-year hurler to earn the honor this season after Maria Priest earned the honor on March 26.
"It's an honor to be recognized and to be able to represent North Texas and my team," Trautwein said.
Trautwein started all three games as the Mean Green took two out of three from Southern Mississippi on the road, securing a program-record fourth road-series victory. She recorded a 15:4 strikeout-to-walk ratio and a 0.78 WHIP over 18 innings pitched.
"Knowing coach Kee had the confidence in me just shows how well we work together and the bond we have," Trautwein said. "The further into the year we are, the more in tune we are with each other. Everyone can see it in her being able to call pitches to my strengths."
Trautwein had a perfect game through 5 2/3 innings of game one and didn't allow a walk in her first 11 innings of the weekend. She became the second freshman in program history to compile 150 strikeouts and snapped a four-decision losing streak with wins in games two and three.
With the series victory, the Mean Green improve to 24-24 and 10-10 in conference play and sit in seventh place heading into the final weekend of the regular season. North Texas hosts UAB (22-29-1, 13-7-1) for a three-game series, beginning with a double-header at 1 and 3 p.m. Saturday.
