NORMAN, Okla. - North Texas junior Ian Snyman battled strong winds and some unlucky rolls on the greens to shoot a 1-under 71 to open the three-day NCAA Norman Regional at the Jimmie Austin OU Golf Club on Monday afternoon.
Snyman heads into Day 2 on Tuesday in a tie for 11th place with four other golfers, as he tries to qualify for the NCAA finals May 25-30 in Stillwater, Okla. To make it to the finals, Snyman, who is competing as an individual after receiving an at-large bid, must finish as the top individual not on one of the top five teams at the completion of the tournament on Wednesday.
Through one round, Snyman currently sits one shot behind Nevada's Corey Eddings and SMU's McClure Meissner for the top individual not on one of the top five teams after the first day.
"I felt comforable and in my element with the strong wind today," Snyman said. "My ball striking and putting was good, the putts just didn't drop."
It was an even round for Snyman, who followed up a bogey on the second hole with an eagle on the par-4 third hole before another bogey on the sixth. Aside from a birdie on 12, he parred every other hole while playing in steady 20 mph winds with gusts up to 30 mph.
"We will take it one shot at a time for the next 36 holes and see what happens," UNT coach Brad Stracke said. "Ian played solid in tough, windy conditions. It was a solid round for him."
Snyman will begin Round 2 play Tuesday with a 9:53 a.m. tee time from Hole 1.
