DENTON - Head coach Michael Akers announced the addition of SEC transfer Claire Cameron to the Mean Green women's golf program Wednesday.
Cameron joins North Texas after spending her freshman season at Kentucky. She recorded a 77.7 stroke average in her two appearances during her first season in Lexington. In just her second collegiate round, she fired a single-round score of 71 at the Bettie Lou Evans Invitational.
"I could not be more excited to announce that Claire will be joining our team next fall," Akers said. "She will add to the depth we have needed. Claire is a very hard-worker and a serious golfer. I believe if you have five players like that, special things can happen."
The Indianapolis native won 42 tournaments during her junior career and joined Kentucky's program as the 39th ranked player in the class of 2017 according to Junior Golf Scoreboard. She qualified five times for the US Girls' Junior Championship from 2013-17. Additionally, Cameron recorded five top-five and eight top-10 finishes on the American Junior Golf Association tour.
Cameron won 14 times on the GolfWeek Junior Golf tour between 2013-16 and at the age of 14 was the youngest player to win the Indiana girls state championship. She was named the Indiana Golf Association Player of the Year on three occasions.
"We showed Claire six of the courses we utilize for playing," Akers continued. "She loved the fact we have access to many different types of courses, grasses and sand. She is also happy to get to a climate that allows her to get on real grass all year. When Claire called me to commit, she said it was a 'no-brainer' to pick UNT. This is exactly what I believe."
The Mean Green are positioned well to continue their ascension as a program heading into 2018-19. They will return four of five members that were in the lineup in every tournament this past season and also add fellow newcomer, freshman Patricia Sinolungan in the fall.
