DENTON - Zachary Simmons, a rising sophomore on the North Texas men's basketball team, finished his six-day foreign tour with the Athletes in Action team visiting Czech Republic and Spain May 27-June 2.

Simmons was able to play against the U20 Czech National team before three games against pro teams in Madrid, Spain. The team got to enjoy a lot of sight-seeing on the trip, including a tour of legendary professional soccer team Real Madrid's Santiago Bernabeu Stadium.

Simmons had a breakout freshman season for the Mean Green breaking the school record for field goal percentage at 66.2 percent and helped the team win the 2018 College Basketball Invitational championship. Simmons started 29 games this past season, including all six CBI Tournament games. His 65 total rebounds were second most in CBI tournament history, including a CBI record 22 rebounds in the CBI championship series at San Francisco.

See below for a first-hand account of Simmons documenting the final portion of his journey:

This trip was one of the best experiences I've had in my life. I really feel like I got closer to God and created some bonds that will last a long time. I think that my spiritual and personal growth was better for me than the basketball side of the trip even though I gained a lot of experience and knowledge on the court.

There was a lot of learning and fun that happened on this trip and I couldn't be more thankful for the people that helped me make it happen. The staff we had out here was incredible and it was amazing to see how much they went out of their way to serve others. I would do it all again if I could.

Just touring Spain and the Czech Republic and being exposed to the culture out here in Europe was something that you have to experience in order to actually appreciate the different customs. I think that coming back I have the tools that I need to really grow as a man and a follower of Christ.
