Shanbour Named To Wuerffel Trophy Watch List

July 26, 2018

FORT WALTON BEACH, Florida - North Texas quarterback Quinn Shanbour was named to the Wuerffel Trophy preseason watch list Thursday, the All Sports Association announced. Shanbour is one of 106 student-athletes vying for the award.

The Wuerffel Trophy, known as "College Football's Premier Award for Community Service," is presented annually at the All Sports Association's Awards Banquet in Fort Walton Beach. Named after 1996 Heisman Trophy winning quarterback Danny Wuerffel from the University of Florida, the Wuerffel Trophy is awarded to the FBS player that best combines exemplary community service with athletic and academic achievement.

Shanbour, a member of the Mean Green's leadership council in 2017, served as the team's backup quarterback, completing 4-of-6 passes for 34 yards and a touchdown, while rushing for 53 yards on six carries.

Additionally, Shanbour is one of the most active members of the program in community outreach and involvement. The senior routinely visits local elementary schools for North Texas' reading program, volunteers with the Frisco chapter of Special Olympics, volunteers with "My Possibilities," a day program that helps give post-secondary education and helps teach life skills to adults with special needs, works with the "Keep Denton Beautiful" organization, and takes part in several other community outreach initiatives in the Denton and Dallas-Fort Worth areas.

Shanbour is also a member of the Student-Athlete Council on campus, is a member of the graduate student council and currently holds an undergraduate degree and Master's degree, while working on another Master's while competing in his final season of eligibility for the Mean Green.

Nominations for the Wuerffel Trophy are made by the respective universities' Sports Information Department and will close on October 12. A current list of nominees can be found at www.wuerffeltrophy.org beginning on August 1. Semifinalists for the award will be announced on November 1 and finalists will be announced on November 19.

The formal announcement of the 2018 recipient will be made at the National Football Foundation's press conference in New York City on December 4. The presentation of the 2018 Wuerffel Trophy will occur at the 50th All Sports Association Awards Banquet on February 15, 2019 in Fort Walton Beach.
