Defense Starts Strong, Offense Shines Late

DENTON – Saturday marked the second scrimmage of fall camp at Apogee Stadium, in conjunction with Mean Green Mania. The defense started the day with a strong performance, creating adversity for the offense. That side of the ball responded late with a few big plays and scoring drives.
Offensive Play of the Day: Redshirt junior wide receiver Jalen Guyton (Allen) had a breakthrough play for the offense when caught a 56-yard touchdown on a quick slant from Mason Fine (Peggs, Oklahoma), where he broke through one tackle and then it was off to the races.
Defensive Play of the Day: Senior defensive linemen Ulaiasi Tauaalo (Keller) and Roderick Young (Spring, Texas) got good penetration to stop the ball carrier for a one yard loss in the early-going.

Catch of the Day: Redshirt sophomore Kam Duhon (Southlake) made a tremendous diving catch on a deep ball thrown by Cade Pearson (Texarkana, Texas) for a gain of 45 yards.
• The Mean Green defense (primarily the first and second units) allowed just three points through the first four drives, including forcing a pair of three-and-outs on the first two possessions, as well as forcing a turnover on downs.

• Six quarterbacks on the roster saw action in the scrimmage. Fine had a good day for the second consecutive scrimmage, completing 17-for-29 passes with one touchdown and no interceptions.

Redshirt junior running back Loren Easly (Houston) picked up a hard-fought three yard gain fighting through initial contact to pick up a first down on third and two. Later on in the scrimmage, Easly made a good decision to cut back against the grain and fought his way for a first down on a fourth-and-short play.

• Freshman linebacker KD Davis (Ennis, Texas) combined with sophomore defensive lineman Dion Novil on a run stuff up the middle for no gain on a third down play.

• Graduate transfer Cole Hedlund (Argyle) made four-of-five field goal attempts on the day, making from 24, 34, 36 and 38 yards, while missing an attempt from 45 yards wide left. Hedlund's make from 38 came in a high-pressure environment with the entire team surrounding him.

• Junior defensive lineman Tuulau Saafi (Euless) recorded the first sack of the day after getting into the backfield quickly.

Redshirt junior running back Anthony Wyche (Philadelphia) had a good day in short-yardage situations, scoring three times on the day near the goal line. The Philadelphia native scored his first from two yards out immediately following a seven-yard scamper on first down to get the ball to the two. He also scored from one yard out two more times, bursting through the middle on both occasions.

* On a second-and-long play, sophomore safety Tyreke Davis (Denton) made a tackle for loss on a short pass after senior corner Kemon Hall (Calhoun City, Mississippi) stacked him up right after the reception was made.

• Redshirt freshman linebacker Chris Thornton (Amarillo) made a big hit, tackling the ball carrier for a minimal gain midway through Saturday's scrimmage.

• Redshirt senior quarterback Quinn Shanbour (Oklahoma City) had a long touchdown run of 57 yards that he broke to the home sideline.

• Sophomore running back Evan Johnson (Loranger, Louisiana) busted a 12-yard gain when he broke a play to the outside to pick up a first down.

• Freshman receiver Jyaire Shorter (Killeen, Texas) again had a strong day, and made a nice 17-yard catch to set up a Wyche touchdown run. Shorter caught the ball along the sideline and outran his defender to get close to the pylon before getting knocked out of bounds.

• Pearson picked out senior wide receiver Cudjoe Young (Chattanooga, Tennessee) for a 30-yard touchdown late in the scrimmage. Young has impressed during the first two-and-a-half weeks of camp. He caught about a 12-yard pass, spun his defender and took it to the house. Young also had a 52-yard touchdown catch, where he showed his explosiveness to get separation from his defender, but it was called back.

• Redshirt senior linebacker E.J. Ejiya (Blaine, Minnesota) stacked up the running back at the line of scrimmage for a nice run stop near the goal line towards the end of the day.

• Hall and sophomore corner Cam Johnson (Houston) had consecutive plays with pass break-ups to close the day for the defense.

Head coach Seth Littrell, Tyreke Davis and junior receiver Michael Lawrence spoke with media members following Saturday's scrimmage.
