SAN ANTONIO – The Mean Green golf team began the 2018-19 season on Monday by shooting a 15-over par 303 in the opening round of the UT San Antonio Lone Star Invitational at the TPC San Antonio Oaks Course.
The tournament was postponed for four hours in the middle of the day, forcing the tournament to be cut down from three rounds to two, with the final round beginning Tuesday morning at 8 a.m.
North Texas is 14 shots behind leader and host UT San Antonio after struggling on the front nine with 13 bogeys, four double-bogeys and a triple bogey. The team stabilized a bit on the back nine, thanks in part to Kristof Ulenaers'
three birdies at 10, 11 and 14.
The Mean Green's best effort was posted by sophomore Viktor Forslund
, who finished the day at 1-over 73, and he is tied for 10th on the individual leaderboard. UNT senior Jordan Sanders
is competing as an individual, and also shot a 73 to tie with Forslund in 10th place.
"Today we got off to a rough start, but the guys fought back on a saturated golf course," UNT coach Brad Stracke said. "I hope we have the opportunity to complete 18 holes tomorrow and pass a lot of teams."
