DENTON – North Texas men's and women's cross country is set to host the annual Ken Garland Invitational Saturday held at UNT Discovery Park with the men's four-mile race beginning at 8:30 a.m. followed by the women's 5k at 9 a.m.
Before the collegiate runners take off, the meet opens with the Northwest High School Invitational at 7:30 a.m.
"This weekend should be a lot of fun," Head Coach Kevin Williams
stated. "It is great to have a meet combined with the area high schools to honor Coach Ken Garland and his contributions to distance running in North Texas. Not only is he a Hall of Fame coach here at UNT, but he also started high school cross country in Denton."
Competing against the Mean Green men will be Incarnate Word and UT Arlington, while the women with contend with UIW, UTA, and SMU.
"On the men's side this will be a nail biter between UIW, UTA, and us," explained Williams. "Last year these three teams were running neck-and-neck all season long, so this will be a good chance to see how we fair in a smaller field with little margin for error."
"In the women's competition, we have a great field set up. SMU looks to have a very strong squad this year, but we should be very competitive with both UTA and UIW. The women are healthier than when we opened up, and we have had good training since Baylor two weeks ago."
