Volleyball Battles In Loss To No. 2 Wisconsin

DENTON - Playing their fourth match over three days in two states, the North Texas volleyball team lost 3-0 (20-25, 13-25, 20-25) to No. 2 Wisconsin on Sunday afternoon. Freshman Rhett Robinson led the Mean Green in kills (14), aces (2) and digs (8).

"It was really exciting getting to play against competition like that in the first place," Robinson said. "Going through our walk-through today, we worked on looking into that big block. I was able to apply that in the match and get some kills."

"Our play is trending upward," head coach Andrew Palileo said. "We did some nice things today, but we've still got some stuff to clean up."

Senior Karley York, who also tallied eight digs, compiled 29 assists and recorded a block assist. Fellow senior Jordyn Williams paced the squad with a pair of blocks and added six kills at a .556 clip.

Robinson had half her kills in the opening frame, leading a North Texas (3-8) offense that posted 17 kills with a .433 hit percentage.

"I've been working on not just going up and hitting it, but being smart about my hits," Robinson said. "It tested my ability to change it up against the big block."

The two teams went back-and-forth early on before Wisconsin (5-1) pulled away with an 8-4 run to go ahead 17-13, but North Texas stormed back to tie it at 18-18 with a 5-1 run, led by back-to-back Valerie Valerian kills.

Sophomore Miranda Youmans, who missed the previous three matches, came off the bench and recorded the game-tying kill after the Mean Green played a ball off the gym's notoriously short roof.

"I thought [Wisconsin] did a good job playing off of it," Palileo said. "Anytime you can get an advantage, you take it. I know they worked on it a little bit."

The Badgers overpowered North Texas down the stretch with a 6-1 run to take set one and carried that momentum into set two, jumping out to a 12-2 lead. Three consecutive kills for Jordyn Williams and a handful of Wisconsin mishaps fueled a 9-5 stretch to get the Mean Green within six, but the Badgers closed on an 8-3 run to take a 2-0 lead in the match.

In the final set, the schools combined for eight of the 16 total aces in the match, starting with Reagan Hubbard's 10th of the season to give North Texas their only lead of the day at 3-2. Wisconsin had a pair of aces in a 10-5 stretch to take a 12-8 lead before Robinson's second of the day sparked a three-point streak to claw back.

The Mean Green rattled off two more 3-0 runs to trim their deficit back to one each time, but the Badgers once again outlasted North Texas at the end of the set to seal the win.

The Mean Green play host to the North Texas Challenge Sept. 13-15, beginning with UNT and Mississippi State at 7 p.m. Thursday.

- Over the final two matches of the weekend, Robinson averaged 5.17 kills per set.
- Reagan Hubbard has recorded an ace in all but three matches this season.
- After hitting .433 in set one, North Texas hit -.017 in sets two and three.
