Judy Buckles Nelson led the 1985-86 women's basketball team to the school's first-ever berth to the NCAA Tournament and the program's first 20-win season.
Nelson began her coaching career at North Texas in 1983 and, in only two seasons, turned a two-win team into a 20-win team.
She coached some of the best players in program history, highlighted by Clara Campbell, who was the 1986 Newcomer of the Year in the Southland Conference. She had wins over SMU, TCU, Baylor and Texas A&M. Nelson coached for six seasons and finished with 66 wins.
