Lanier Hester played football and basketball at North Texas, becoming a two-time all-Lone Star Conference quarterback in 1936 and 1937 and leading the Eagles to the conference championship in 1936.
In basketball, Hester was a member of the 1938 squad that won the Lone Star Conference championship and advanced to the NAIA national championship tournament, where North Texas placed third.
