A member of the track team from 1959-62, Menchaca set a school record in the 880-meter run as a sophomore and led the distance-medley relay team to a record-setting victory at the Kansas Relays.

Menchaca was captain of the team as a senior, when he won the Missouri Valley Conference championship in the mile.
