A four-year letterman in track from 1935-38, Royal Kinder was a three-time Lone Star Conference champion in 1936 in the low hurdles, sprint relay and mile relay.

He helped lead North Texas to three Lone Star Conference team championships and also qualified for the 1936 Olympic Trials in the 400-yard hurdles.
