What is a National Letter of Intent?

A National Letter of Intent (NLI) is the official document administered by the Collegiate Commissioners Association and utilized by the subscribing member institutions to establish the commitment of a prospect to attend a particular institution.
An institution may indicate in writing to a prospect that an athletically related grant-in-aid will be offered by the institution; however, the institution may not permit the prospect to sign a form indicating his/her acceptance of such award prior to the initial signing date of the sport in the NLI program.
- Basic Penalt
- Signing a NLI with one institution but enrolling with another institution participating in the NLI program will result in the student-athlete not being able to represent the latter institution in intercollegiate athletics competition until completing two full academic years of residence at the latter institution
- An athlete will be charged with the loss of two seasons of intercollegiate athletics competition in all sports, except as otherwise provided in this NLI.
