Mean Green Compliance: Playing and Practice Seasons
The following playing and practice rules govern what coaches and student-athletes can do relative to number of hours of practice per day, weekly and daily practice, in-season and out-of-season practice, days off and competition.
Daily and Weekly Hour Limitations during the Playing Season
1) A student-athlete shall be limited to 20 hours of athletically related activities (practice and competition) per week.
2) A student-athlete shall be limited to 4 hours of athletically related activities (practice and competition) per day.
3) A golf practice-round can exceed the 4 hours per-day limit, but the limit of 20 hours per week shall still apply.
Other Limitations during the Playing Season
1) A golf practice-round the day prior to a tournament shall count only as 3 hours.
2) A student-athlete who participates in more than one sport shall have separate limitations for each sport.
3) All competition shall count as 3 hours, regardless of the actual duration of the activities.
4) Practice may not be conducted at any time following competition, except between contests, round or events during a multiday or multievent competition (such as doubleheaders or rounds of golf).
5) All student-athletes are required to be given at least one day off per week during the playing season, except during preseason practice, conference championships, NCAA championships, bowl games and the NIT tournament.
Limitations on Practice outside the Playing Season
1) A student-athlete in sports other than football shall be limited to 8 hours of practice per week.
2) A student-athlete in sports other than football shall be limited to 2 hours of skill-related instruction per week.
3) A student-athlete shall not participate in any team-related athletic activities in the off-season during any institutional vacation periods (such as Thanksgiving, Christmas, Spring Break, Summer, etc.).
4) No more than 4 student-athletes shall be involved in skill-related instruction at one time. In Men’s/Women’s Basketball more that 4 student athlete’s may be involved in skill-related instruction at one time.
5) Between the Institution’s last contest to January 1st, a student-athlete in the sport of football are limited to only required weight-training, conditioning and individual skill instruction which may not exceed 8 hours per week in which no more than 2 hours may be spent for viewing film.
