DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. - The North Texas Cheerleaders recently placed sixth in the Division 1A category at the 2008 NCA/NDA National Competition in Daytona Beach, Florida. They competed against the best cheer teams in Division 1, teams such as: the University of Louisville, Oklahoma State University and North Carolina State University. Their six place finished put them ahead of such teams as Virginia Tech University, Purdue University and Georgia Tech.
“This was indeed a monumental event for this team and for me,” head cheer coach Heath Miller said. “This group showed perseverance and integrity throughout this year and throughout this event. They spent this year fundraising and practicing, making sacrifices both physically and socially while still attending University events whenever they were asked. I must say that I couldn't be more proud of this group of athletes who I am sure will go on to do great things after college.”
The cheerleaders could not make it to National Competition alone. They would like to thank the alumni cheerleaders that had a hand in getting the team to Daytona. Several came in to offer valued advice, opinions and even one paid for the airfare to get to the competition itself. They are very grateful for that.
Miller said, “We appreciated the support throughout this year from the dance team and the input from their coach, Jennifer Cloutier. Not every cheer squad has the advantage of having a great relationship with the dance team, but we do and I am very happy about that.”
The North Texas Cheerleaders look forward to building this program to the national status it had in the past and this accomplishment is a tremendous start.
