Let me first begin this letter by sharing a few items that are strategic to our growth as an athletics program. Our goal is the same today as it was when I took over as Director of Athletics in 2001 - to consistently be one of the top athletic programs in the nation.
Like any great business, North Texas is constantly looking at ways in which we can improve ourselves as an athletic department. Specifically now that the new Football Stadium is a reality, we must become more transparent in our interactions and more cognizant of the needs of you ..... our stakeholders.
Second, we must grow our season ticket and Mean Green Club customer base. As the northernmost part of the Metroplex, our location provides us with tremendous marketing opportunities and the ability to reach over 170,000 alumni within a two-hour radius. That being said, we must improve our product and constantly provide a better value for the competitive entertainment dollar. We must make each customer feel that no matter the outcome of the contest, they were happy to attend a North Texas athletics event and want to come back again.
Finally, we need to show our constituents that there is a significant value to our product. Intercollegiate athletics at North Texas has grown tremendously over the past ten years, and our teams continue to set school, conference and national records for performance. To continue to achieve this level of success, we need everyone who 'bleeds green' to participate. Whether it's joining the Mean Green Club, buying season tickets, or traveling to conference tournaments your increased support is vital to North Texas athletics. There is room for everyone to participate in our athletics department!
In just under a decade at North Texas, I've had thousands of conversations with individuals who share a sense of passion, togetherness and generosity. Now more than ever, we must continue to capitalize on this goodwill both within and outside the Mean Green athletics family.
I look forward to sharing our vision, as well as the stories of those who define what it is to be Mean Green, in future editions of "Villarreal's Views".
I want to personally thank you for your continued support of North Texas Athletics. Your generosity towards our 350 student-athletes is truly appreciated!
GO MEAN GREEN!
Rick Villarreal
