No. 40- Hayden Fry Era Win Total
The first one came on Sept. 22, 1973. The last one on Nov. 18, 1978. The Hayden Fry era produced 40 wins in his time as the head coach at North Texas and two of the best seasons in school history. Fry began in 1973 by winning the Missouri Valley Conference title with a 5-5-1 record.
After a down year of 2-7-2 in 1974, the Mean Green took off by winning 33 games over the next four years and producing the second best winning percentage over a four-year stretch in school history (Mean Joe and company from 66-69 have the best four-year winning percentage).
In 1975 North Texas went 7-4, including the magical win at Tennessee and followed that up with another 7-4 year in '76. The Mean Green then had seasons of 10-1 and 9-2 to end the era of Fry.
As the head coach, the Mean Green had some of its biggest wins to this day and Fry was the engineer behind the victories.
The '75 upset of Tennessee, the school's first (and only) win over a Top-25 team in 1974 (14-9 W over San Diego St.), a victory over SMU in 1977, and 12-7 win over Oklahoma State in 1978.
Fry finished his career at North Texas with 40 wins, 23 losses and 3 ties. He went onto further cement his greatness at Iowa, but the 40 wins he chalked up at North Texas left him as a permanent legend.
