No. 19 - Abner Haynes Scores 19 Career Rushing Touchdowns
Few folks would argue the following statement – “Abner Haynes was the best athlete in school history.”
You surely won’t hear a peep out of me. The two-time All-Missouri Valley Conference selection not only led his Eagles to the 1959 Sun Bowl game as an All-American, but he did it averaging 6.3 yards per run, leading the team in receiving (14.4 yards per catch), kick returns (25.3 ypr), punt returns (20.1 career ypr) and was second on the team in interceptions.
Oh yea, and he did all that after breaking the school’s color barrier with his teammate Leon King.
Haynes was one of the nation’s top tailbacks. He ranked seventh in the nation in rushing and fifth in scoring as a senior. During his illustrious career he would find the endzone 19 times for rushing touchdowns, which ties for eighth in school history.
