No. 13 - Shanklin's Big Year
With offenses moving to the spread and rule changes favoring the passing attack, it is rare to see any sort of passing game record from long ago. Offenses now are built around opening up the field vertically and horizontally with the pass, and as a result, it is much harder for defenses to stop good receivers. One of the few old school receivers to still hold a record at North Texas is Ronnie Shanklin, who had 13 touchdowns in 1968, which still stands today, as well as his 31 career touchdowns.
Shanklin had 41 catches for 867 yards and 13 touchdowns in 1968, his junior season. Shanklin was on the other ends of double-teams all season, which allowed teammate Barry Moore to earn first team All-Missouri Valley honors, and yet Shanklin still set the touchdown record. Shanklin, with 41 receptions and 13 touchdowns, scored on 31 percent of his total, a simply staggering number to think about. In comparison, Casey Fitzgerald's outrageous 2007 season saw him catch 12 touchdowns, with almost four times as many receptions (111) as Shanklin.
Shanklin would retire from North Texas with an NCAA record for most touchdowns from a quarterback-receiver combo, with 30 of his career touchdowns from Steve Ramsey.
