No. 12 - Andrew Smith
He was thrust into the starting lineup as a redshirt freshman in the first game of the season at Texas, and when the season was over he led North Texas to its first bowl victory since 1946 and only the second in school history.
Andrew Smith wore No. 12. He arrived in Denton in 2001 after leading the Bay City Black Cats to a state title. He took a redshirt his freshman year in 2001. After Scott Hall went down for the season at Texas, Smith started the final 11 games.
He finished with 1,206 yards passing and seven touchdowns as he guided the Mean Green to seven straight wins and an 8-5 record, capped off by a 24-19 win over Cincinnati in the 2002 New Orleans Bowl.
Smith and Hall split time at the QB position during the first four games of the 2003 season before Hall eventually took over the starting role.
In 2004 just days prior to the start of fall camp, Smith was tragically killed in an automobile accident on his way back to Denton. His jersey number, 12, has not been worn by a Mean Green player since.
