No. 9 - Renzi To Dinkle Wins Optimist Bowl
With the score tied at 7, Pacific scored with just three minutes remaning in the 1946 Optimist Bowl, and Amos Alonzo Stagg was in very good position to win his final college game, this one over North Texas.
First year coach of North Texas, Odus Mitchell, would not have that happen. Pacific missed the extra point, and North Texas now had an opportunity to win outright down 13-7. North Texas took the ensuing kick back to the 28 yard line. With starting quarterback Fred McCain sent off for fighting earlier in the game, North Texas started to make its comeback. Joe Gleb passed to Luther Famboro for 28 yards. With the ball on Pacific's 44, North Texas threw two incompletions. Bobby Furrh rushed for 10 on a draw play to move the chains, and Pacific was penalized for 15 yards.
North Texas, set up on the 14 yard line, got another five yard penalty to bring up first down on the nine yard line.
North Texas threw incomplete on first down. And on second down. And third down.
With nine seconds left, and the game in the balance on fourth down, Louis Reinzi found Billy Dinkle between the goalposts for a nine yard touchdown grab to tie the game. Dinkle converted the extra point and North Texas won its first bowl game by a score of 14-13.
