To commemorate the final broadcast on the Mean Green Radio Network for play-by-play man George Dunham, we're taking a look back at some of the greatest moments in Dunham's career as the voice of the Mean Green.
In the first year under head coach Matt Simon, the North Texas football team snapped a three-year streak of losing seasons, capturing the Southland Conference championship. That campaign is also remembered for a call by play-by-play man George Dunham.
The October 15, 1994, game at Fouts Field was a showdown between nationally-ranked teams. North Texas was No. 24 in the nation in Division I-AA, while McNeese was No. 5, the pre-season league favorite, and owner of an 11-game conference winning streak.
Both teams had early leads, and North Texas took a 13-10 advantage to halftime before McNeese scored early in the third period for a 17-13 lead. But NT quarterback Mitch Maher threw a pair of touchdown passes, one to David Brown and one to Luis Silva, to put the Mean Green up, 30-17.
McNeese tried to rally late and had driven deep into North Texas territory when the Cowboys fumbled at the Mean Green 13-yard line. North Texas linebacker Brett Renfro scooped up the loose ball and went 87 yards for a clinching touchdown, inspiring Dunham's famous call.
The Mean Green's 38-17 win propelled North Texas to the Southland title and a berth in the Division I-AA playoffs.
