BIRMINGHAM – Bailey Ashmore and Jaleisa Shaffer of North Texas each broke their own school records at the Conference USA Indoor Track & Field Championships hosted by UAB while Aneesa Scott took runner-up and third place honors in sprints Sunday at CrossPlex.
Ashmore vaulted 4.06 meters to best her previous mark of 3.88 set Jan. 17 at the Ted Nelson Invitational to capture second place. Shaffer topped her previous record set last season by nearly three feet with a toss of 15.50 to conclude in third. Scott ran the 400 in 54.38 seconds to finish just out of first and also placed third in the 200 in 24.13 seconds.
The Mean Green women posted 51.50 points to finish seventh overall, and the men came in eighth with 35.50 points.
"Not our best day," director of track and field Carl Sheffield said. "We met our women's team point total goal but missed a couple of spots overall. The men had some bright spots, and it was a great meet for the throws group."
Karlington Anunagba took second in the 60-meter dash in 6.73 seconds, and Antonio Delacruz came in fourth at 6.84. Delacruz also earned a fifth-place finish in the 200 with a time of 21.58 seconds.
Sydney Salinas was a spot behind Ashmore for a podium finish with a vault of 3.86 meters, and Lyric Choice also took third place in the 60-meter hurdles in 8.58 seconds.
Micayla Needham placed fourth in shot put with a heave of 14.35 meters, and Chris Samaniego finished eighth at 15.51. Baylee Nelson ran the 800 in 2:17.21 for seventh place, and the 4x400-meter relay team of Ziphion Reevey, Davonye Jones, Yannick Kalidas and James Moten took seventh with a time of 3:18.93.
"We'll use the next weeks to prepare for the outdoor season. We need to get in some quality training time," Sheffield said.
The Mean Green begin the 2020 outdoor season March 12 at UT Arlington.
