COLLEGE STATION, Texas – Head cross country coach Erik Stevens took a large group of men's runners, while the women's team is battling numerous injuries, to the Texas A&M Invitational on Saturday morning.
The men opened the event with an 8k run - their first of the season - and were paced by sophomore Joseph Wienen, who placed 26th with a time of 24:46.60. He was followed closely by sophomore Nolan House (33rd), junior Alan Proenza (51st), senior Matthew Norton (54th), sophomore Matt Montgomery (65th), sophomore Aidan Shannon (74th), freshman Jason Wade (87th) and freshman Luke Anderson (94th). The team finished eighth out of 13 teams.
On the women's side, the Mean Green had just one runner going, as sophomore Ella Bengtsson finished 50th in the 5k run in 18:50.70.
"I thought we did a pretty solid job for a true season opener," Stevens said. "Our front end was very strong and executed our plan pretty well. Numbers 3, 4 and 5 ran slightly ahead of schedule to solidify decent showings. Good start for this time of year in the training block we're in. On the women's side, obviously not running a full group, but Ella ran well and executed her plan almost to perfection for a very solid start for her."
The Mean Green will travel to Fayetteville, Arkansas, for the Chile Pepper Invitational on Saturday, Oct. 4, for their next competition.
