DENTON (10/7/05) - The North Texas volleyball team looks to win its third straight Sun Belt match when the Mean Green faces Denver on Friday night in Colorado. Both teams are tied for first place in the league's West Division. The Mean Green then returns home for the first time in a month to play Arkansas-Little on Sunday at 1 pm in the Snake Pit.
North Texas has won eight of its last 11 outings and is off to a 2-0 start in Sun Belt Conference play after defeating South Alabama and Troy in road matches last weekend. The Mean Green will wrap up an extended stretch away from the Snake Pit, 10 matches to be exact, on Friday when it plays at Denver. The Mean Green then returns home for a match against SBC East Division opponent Arkansas-Little Rock on Sunday, which will be its first outing at the Snake Pit since September 10.
The Mean Green and Pioneers have played each other 10 times as Sun Belt Conference (West Division) opponents since 2000, NT’s first year in the league. North Texas holds the advantage in the all-time series, 6-4, but split the season series last year. The Mean Green has won three of the last four meetings as it swept the Pioneers in 2003. North Texas has also won its last four matches when playing at Denver.
North Texas head coach Cassie Headrick has 74 career wins over the last six seasons, including 2005, and needs just nine more victories to overtake Vickie Guy (82 wins from 1979-84) as the school’s all-time winningest coach. If Headrick reaches 80 wins this year, she will tie Guy as the fastest coach in North Texas history to reach 80 wins. Donna Martin is currently second in all-time victories with 81. Headrick currently has the best winning percentage among that group.
