DENTON (11/22/05) - The North Texas football team will close out its 2005 season with a Saturday afternoon game against Arkansas State at Fouts Field at 1 pm.
For the first time in five seasons, North Texas (2-8, 2-4) will not be going to a bowl game after its Sun Belt finale. Arkansas State (5-5, 4-2), on the other hand, can clinch a share of the conference title with a win against the Mean Green and a loss by Louisiana-Monroe. The game can be heard on the Mean Green Radio Network.
A possible trip to the New Orleans Bowl is on the line for Arkansas State, who features the Sun Belt’s top scoring offense at 24.4 points per game. Indian running back Antonio Warren also leads the conference with 117.6 rushing yards a game. Patrick Cobbs, the 2003 national rushing champion, has been the Mean Green’s top offensive threat this season. The senior leads the Sun Belt with 126.9 all-purpose yards a game.
Mean Green head coach Darrell Dickey is in his eighth year at North Texas and has an overall record of 39-54, including a 32-16 conference record. Dickey has been named the Coach of the Year in the Sun Belt Conference in each of the last four seasons after leading the Mean Green to four straight conference titles and New Orleans Bowl appearances. Steve Roberts is in his third season at Arkansas State and has led the Indians to a 19-27 record. Overall, Roberts owns a 68-54 record in 12 years as a head coach.
North Texas leads the overall series with Arkansas State 8-6, including a 4-2 edge at Fouts Field. The Mean Green has taken the last four meetings, outscoring the Indians 147-31 since the Sun Belt began playing football in 2001. The series began with a Mean Green 17-0 win in Little Rock, Ark. in 1983.
