Mean Green's Comeback Falls Short, 31-28

DENTON (11/5/05) Louisiana-Lafayette scored a touchdown with 1:10 remaining in the game to foil a North Texas comeback and steal a 31-28 victory against the Mean Green on Saturday night at Fouts Field.
Louisiana-Lafayette (4-5, 3-2) beat the Mean Green (2-6, 2-2) for the first time since 1982 but stills trails in the series meetings, 7-3. NT had won the previous five meetings with the Ragin’ Cajuns.

The Mean Green received the kickoff with 1:10 on the clock but fumbled the ball away to seal the UL Lafayette victory.
Cobbs ran for a season-high 197 yards in the game, including a 59-yard touchdown run at the start of the third quarter. He became NT’s all-time leading scorer with his third touchdown of the game, which gave the Mean Green its only lead of the game. The senior now has 234 career points, passing Keith Chapman (1985-89).
Except for a 22-yard field goal, Louisiana-Lafayette scored all its points on the ground. Tyrell Fenroy scored three rushing touchdowns, including the game-winner, and finished with 102 yards.
As a team, UL-Lafayette rushed for 327 yards and posted 436 yards of total offense. The Ragin’ Cajuns scored on its first possession of the game, a six-yard scamper by Fenroy to put them ahead, 7-0.
After quarterback Jerry Babb ran in the second score for UL Lafayette, Daniel Meager responded with a 27-yard touchdown pass to Johnny Quinn with 6:56 left in the second quarter. The pass was the longest of the quarterback’s career and capped off the longest touchdown drive of the season.
Despite the loss, several
Linebacker Maurice Holman registered the first sack of his career in the first quarter on a key third-down play. Wide receiver Brandon Jackson had a career-high day with four catches for 59 yards, including a long of 22 yards.
