Bazaldua Awarded NCAA Postgraduate Scholarship

DENTON (3/06/06) Former Mean Green football player Nick Bazaldua was named the third North Texas football player to ever receive an NCAA Postgraduate Scholarship.

Bazaldua, who held the team’s top GPA in each of the last four seasons, is one of only 29 male athletes from across the country to be selected to the honor. Only four Division I football players and 11 Division I athletes overall were awarded the $7,500 scholarship.

Bazaldua finished his career as North Texas’ and the Sun Belt’s all-time leading scorer with 247 career points. The kicker also finished tops in school history in PAT’s (121) and second in field goals made (42). He earned honorable mention All-Sun Belt honors in 2005 and was a first team all-conference selection in 2004 after leading all kickers in scoring.

As celebrated as the DeSoto, Texas native was on the field, he is even more spectacular in the classroom. Bazaldua is expected to graduate with a finance degree this August and is carrying a 3.9 GPA. He hopes to attend law school following graduation.

According to the NCAA, to qualify for the scholarship a student-athlete must have an overall grade-point average of at least 3.2, and must have performed with distinction in their particular sport. The athlete must also have a desire to continue their academic work with graduate studies.
