ESPN.com's NCAA Tournament guru Joe Lunardi has come out with his initial bracketology picks and as many of you have seen he's got North Texas as the No. 14 seed facing off against North Carolina.....again. Here's hoping for a different matchup if and when it comes to that in March. (Sorry, no redo's for me when it comes to possible NCAA opponents).
A few other things grabbed my attention besides the initial picks. Two teams the Mean Green has already faced, Texas A&M and OK State are on his list. The Aggies check in as a No. 6 seed while the Cowboys are one of the last four teams out as of right now.
If you are part of the ESPN high roller club, (the insider) you get his explanation of the first bracket broken down a little more in detail. Lunardi puts North Texas into the unexpected category for now as a team that has bumped Western Kentucky off the list. For now. The Hilltoppers notched the league's best win of the year against No. 24 Vandy last week so more than likely the road to the NCAA will sooner or later go through Bowling Green.
Unless somebody runs the table in the league, the Belt is going to be a one-bid league so that makes conference seeding and eventually the tournament worth all the marbles.
The Mean Green is off to a great start at 6-3 and more importantly 1-0 in the SBC. With preseason expectations high before the year, this will only serve as a reminder to North Texas and its opponents that this programs isn't where is was when the decade started.
The early notoriety is good and the recognition that goes with it, but targets, though, on the Mean Green's backs just got a little bit bigger too.
