Rodolfo Cazaubon and Carlos Ortiz, two of the most talented golfers in recent memory at North Texas, take their games to the world stage starting tomorrow.
The duo tees off tomorrow at the beginning of the World Amateur Team Championship in Beunos Aires. The pair represents 2/3 of the Mexican team, pretty special company for the two sophomore's.
There are 70 different teams representing 70 different nations around the globe at the WATC. The competition is stroke play, which is good. Each team is comprised of three players and it's the best two out of three rounds that count for each day of competition.
Cazaubon and Ortiz are paired with players from Wales and Korea. When they left late last week, both were brimming with pride but also confidence. And why not.
If there is a more confident player than Ortiz in the nation, I'd like to meet them. He's won back-to-back tournaments and is playing the best golf of his life.
He's climbed into the top-100 nationally, checking in at No. 92 in the country this week, the highest ranking for an individual in North Texas men's golf history since the rankings began. To take his game to the world stage is only another measuring stick for him.
Cazaubon and Ortiz represent the rebirth of the North Texas men's golf program. They were the first two recruits in the rebuilding process and have not disappointed. They have been better than advertised and then some.
Going to the world stage for their next level of competition will serve them well when they return. The fall season is over, but heading into the spring the Mean Green has established itself as a top-25 program.
Cazaubon and Ortiz are a major reason why. They will represent their country of Mexico well and their university even better this weekend.
