A trifecta of North Texas players were honored by the CFPA (College Football Performance Awards) for their efforts in the Mean Green win over MTSU. Lance Dunbar, Zach Olen, and John Shorter were all Honorable Mention players of the week by the CFPA.
Another gutty effort by Dunbar was the key to the win against MTSU. He showed power, poise, and speed as he topped the 1,000 yard mark for the season. He's just the second player to do it now in consecutive years, the other is Kevin Galbreath who went in the NT Hall of Fame this year. Dunbar is well on his way.
Olen, what else can you say. In August I was a better option than Olen at kicker. Now, he's making his case to be Freshman of the Year in the SBC. Yes, that's what I said. I don't he gets it, but find me a better true freshman kicker in the nation right now than him.
And John Shorter welcome back. He must like November because he uncorked his best game last year against ASU on the road and against MTSU this year. His picks were huge, but his int. return late in the first half setup the Olen FG to begin with and would have happened without it.
As for the team, it's a new looking group. New life, energy, commitment, and focus. This team has a chance to go 4-2 on the road this season if they can win at ULM Saturday. There hasn't been a road record that good at North Texas since 1978 when Hayden took the team to a 3-1 road mark. The previous year they went 5-2, but we are talking almost 32 years.
Mike Canales has made no secret he wants the job and the players are playing like they want him to coach them.
ULM won't be easy, but this team looks like a squad that's 7-3, not 3-7.
