Sometimes in recruiting it's all about timing, luck, and catching a few breaks. In her now two-plus seasons of recruiting, Shanice Stephens has had her share of heartaches on the trail, but today she caught a big-time break with the signing of Trai-ce McCoy.
McCoy is a player that by all accounts wasn't on anyone's radar until her senior season. After talking with her head coach at Dunbar, Ebony Shaw, it was apparent that McCoy was overlooked by many, especially after her senior season.
Word on the street was that McCoy was pursued heavily by metroplex schools, especially those with connections to Shaw. Have I mentioned Shaw went to TCU yet?
McCoy is a combo guard, (yes, the roster is now loaded with those), a scorer who can also rebound at that position, as evident by her double-double this past season. But from a shear talent standpoint, this is a big addition for North Texas.
Now if you're counting at home, you are probably wondering where did Stephens get another scholarship from. Well actually nobody left they way your thinking; it was the graduation of Niq'ky Hughes this past weekend. Hughes received her diploma and instead of coming back for her senior season she decided it was time to head out into the real world.
Good for her for finishing her degree after transferring in two years ago from Texas.
The coaching staff though wisely used this last scholarship in landing McCoy, a player and the kind of break this team needs.
