2010 Player Preview: Craig Robertson
8/2/2010 12:00:00 AM | Football
Height/Weight: 6-1, 221
Class: Senior
Signed: 2006 from Stafford High School.
2009 Key Stat: 107, the number of tackles Robertson racked up last season to lead North Texas in that category. Robertson was the only player to top the century mark in tackles part in parcel to the injury to Tobe Nwigwe but also in part to his emerging as one of the leaders of the defense after Nwigwe's departure.
Why he will start: Four-year letterman, top returning tackler, all-conference selection, and arguably the team leader on defense. If Robertson can duplicate his junior year the linebackers will be in good shape.
Why he won't start: Injury. Plain and simple Robertson is No. 1 linebacker on the field right now for North Texas.
Don't forget: Robertson normally does quite a bit of work for the North Texas athletic department on the field, but this summer he quite literally worked for the athletic department. Robertson was an intern in the marketing department and got an inside peek as to how the world of athletics works. On the field this season Robertson has a chance to make some history. He enters the year with 248 career tackles, which leaves him 142 shy of the all-time record of 390 held by Burks Washington. It's unlikely he reaches that but with just 77 tackles this season he will enter the top five all-time.
Overall: Robertson is no longer in anyone's shadow on the defensive side of the ball. He should take a leadership role and command of the defense and prove why he is an all-conference player. The defense enters the season with a lot of questions, Robertson however is not one of them. If this defense is to be good again, it will start with Robertson and how well people play off of him and how much of an impact he makes on and off the field.
