With the fall camp over and done with, the countdown to Clemson is underway as game week is upon us. So it's time to take a minute and hand out some awards to the best moments and plays of the fall camp.
Best Hit- DaWaylon Cook - Midway through the camp, Cook uncorked a wicked pop on Brelan Chancellor going over the middle. One of many that Cook had throughout the entire camp. Jonas Buckles-like.
Runner-Up- Zack Orr- During the vaunted "W" drill, Orr landed a big pop that was so good that offensive coordinator Mike Canales even quipped "that's going to be on the internet now!" Orr brought the lumber a couple of times throughout the camp and has worked his way onto the bus, and maybe even the starting lineup.
Honorable Mention- Steven Ford- Also during the "W" drill, Ford unloaded on QB John Dodson so much so that he lifted Dodson off the ground and pummeled him into the dirt.
Best Catch- Brelan Chancellor- The freshman had a boatload of these throughout the camp, but this particular one came in double coverage. Chancellor was coming across the middle, picked up another defender and made an over-the-shoulder grab.
Best Fight- Steven Ford and Chris Bynes- The coaches weren't upset at the fight, but the fact that it took time away from getting more reps. The pair got tangled up late in a practice and the tempers got flared up.
Worst Decision- Richard Abbe- The true freshman, not even on campus for a week, decided it was time to throw down with veteran offensive lineman Kelvin Drake during the offensive and defensive line drills. The two got tangled up early, and like so many fights with large lineman, a lot of weight was thrown around, but in the end none was lost. Abbe learned his lesson fast.
Best Move- Lance Dunbar- Really going out on a limb here, but Dunbar early into the fall camp, had a double-move on two linebackers that left them spinning. He's was protected much-like an NFL veteran in camp, but it still wasn't easy to land any shots on him.
Biggest Blow-Up- Sure anything by DeLoach, but this one goes to Mike Canales. It was a morning practice and everyone was sleepwalking. Canales about seven periods in brought the entire offense in and did more than read the riot act, he rewrote it. Suffice to say practice became slightly more spirited after that.
Biggest Surprise - Brelan Chancellor- The freshman receiver didn't look like much coming into fall camp at just 5-7 and maybe 165. Show's what I know because this kid can catch, run routes, and is sneaky fast. The question about redshirting him or playing him won't be easy, but he's close to being on the travel squad to Clemson if that's any indication about what they plan on doing with him.
Next American Idol- Brandin Byrd- He's a star in the making on the football field too, but Mr. Byrd gets the award for the smoothest, deepest, most baritone voice I've ever heard. He's Barry White off the field. But on the field, he's going to be something else.
