No. 74 - North Texas Downs No. 20 San Diego State
A rainy November 2, 1974, saw the 20th ranked San Diego State Aztecs (5-1) invade Fouts Field to take on a struggling North Texas team that entered the game with a 1-5-1 record in Hayden Fry's second year at the helm.
After winning the coin toss and electing to receive the kick, SDSU started moving the ball on the Eagles. After a quick first down, the Aztecs stalled and were forced to attempt a punt that was partially blocked by NT's Lavell Jenkins.
Eight plays later the eagles punched it in with a 25-yard TD pass to go up 7-0 on SDSU less than five minutes into the game.
Following the ensuing kick-off, the Aztecs throw an interception to David Deaton who takes it to the house and makes the score 14-0 with 8:41 left on the clock in the fourth quarter.
North Texas would have to hold off the Aztecs offense for the next 53 minutes to secure the program's first win over a ranked team.
The Eagles defense used a bend and not break tactic, allowing SDSU to rack up 380 total yards in the game, including a 69-yard touchdown pass with 4:17 left on the clock in the fourth quarter to make the score 14-9.
After a North Texas punt, the Aztecs would make it to the Eagle 16 yard line with 1:25 left, but after four straight incompletions, turn the ball over on downs with only one timeout remaining.
NT would drain the remainder of the clock for the 14-9 win, the first and only time a North Texas football team has defeated a ranked opponent to this day.
