Dunbar Named To Doak Walker Watch List

DENTON, Texas - North Texas senior running back Lance Dunbar was named to the watch list for the 2011 Doak Walker Award, which is awarded annually to the nation's top collegiate running back, the PwC SMU Athletic Forum announced Friday.
Dunbar becomes the first North Texas back to be selected to the watch list since Jamario Thomas in 2006.
Dunbar enters 2011 with the third-most rushing yards and rushing touchdowns among all players in the Football Bowl Subdivision.
A two-time All-America honoree by Sports Illustrated, Dunbar finished 2010 ranked sixth in the nation in rushing and 10th in the nation in all-purpose yards. He ranks third in career rushing yards (3,109) among all returning FBS players and only LaMichael James of Oregon has more yards over the past two years.

In addition, Dunbar has launched an assault on the North Texas record book, and currently ranks second in career touchdowns, all-purpose yards, and 100 yard rushing games at a school that has seen many great running backs put up numbers.
Dunbar ranks fourth in rushing yards, and points scored before starting his senior season. He needs just 941 yards to become the school's all-time leading rusher, eclipsing Patrick Cobbs who compiled 4,050 yards from 2001-05.
The Doak Walker Award has been awarded every year since 1990 to the nation's top running back. The award is named for 1948 Heisman Trophy winner Doak Walker, a standout back at Highland Park High School, SMU and with the Detroit Lions. It is the only major college football award that requires recipients to be in good academic standing and on pace to graduate within a year of their class.
