No. 36- What A Rush For Renfro

Huge afternoons were becoming the norm for Ray Renfro, and against Midwestern State on November 10, 1951 he turned in one of the best. Renfro rushed for 181 yards in the Mean Green's 61-0 win over Midwestern State that day.

But the big number of the day wasn't the 181 yards or the final score, it was 36.2. That was the yards per play that Renfro rushed for that day. He carried the ball only five times and had a yards per carry of 36.2, which still remains the school record by a wide margin.

Renfro had what is still tied for the longest rush in school history that day as well. He ran for a 95-yard touchdown that day as the Eagles captured the Gulf Coast Championship that day.

North Texas racked up 498 yards, but it was Renfro's huge afternoon that made a mark in the record books.

Just how great an afternoon was it? 60 years later his record breaking afternoon remains at the top of both categories for longest rush and yards per carry. Renfro was named a first-team AP All-American that year and went onto a play for the Cleveland Browns for 12 seasons in the NFL.
