DENTON -- Through Day 2 of the Wild West Shootout, two North Texas singles players and one doubles duo have advanced to the finals and are eligible to win their respective draws on Sunday.
In the White draw, sophomore Alexis Thoma continued her dominance with a 6-4, 6-1 win over junior Dhanielly Quevedo of SFA. In the final match, Thoma will play UT Arlington sophomore Astrid Gehre. In the Silver draw, junior Agustina Valenzuela finished off SFA sophomore Macarena Sedano Acosta by a score of 6-3, 6-0. Valenzuela has dropped only four games the entire tournament in singles and she will now face sophomore Chloe Forlini of Air Force in the final match.
"Alexis and and Agustina both did a good job of finishing today," head coach Sujay Lama praised. "[And now they] have opportunities to win their bracket tomorrow."
Sophomore Ana Sofia Cordero posted a 6-3, 6-3 victory against senior Marcelli Magday of Air Force in the Black draw, and she now has a matchup against Air Force sophomore Tracy Landram in the back draw final.
In the Green draw, junior Anastasiya Shestakova dropped a 6-3, 6-2 decision to junior Elizabeth Thoms of UT Alrington, and she now drops to play UT Arlington sophomore Angelos de los Rios in the third place match. Senior Kseniya Bardabush lost 6-4, 6-4 to senior Natasha Rizvi of Air Force and now has a matchup with Air Force junior Mary Meyers in the back draw.
Meanwhile, in doubles play, the duo of Cordero and Valenzuela defeated the SFA duo of Acosta and sophomore Denise Maxl by a score of 8-3, and will now face sophomore Jessica Birowski and freshman Augustina Serio of UT Arlington in the White draw final.
"We had good chemistry in doubles," Lama said. "Agustina and Ana Sofia continue to jell and are becoming a good team."
With another day of play to cap off the Wild West Shootout, Lama says the goal for his team is to finish strong tomorrow and the good results will follow for the Mean Green. Just as it did on Saturday, play will begin at 10 a.m. on Sunday morning.
