HOUSTON - The North Texas volleyball team lost to Rice 3-0 (25-17, 25-21, 26-24) on Sunday afternoon at the Tudor Fieldhouse. Despite fighting off a pair of match points to tie it at 24-24, the Mean Green's hopes of forcing a fourth set fell short.
Trailing 24-22, sophomore Barbara Teakell posted her 11th kill of the match and freshman Rhett Robinson recorded a solo block to even the score, but the Owls sealed the match with back-to-back kills.
Teakell tallied six of her 11 kills in the final frame, accounting for a third of the team's 18 kills in set three. After posting just eight kills in the opening set, North Texas averaged 15 per set over the final two stanzas.
Robinson finished with a team-high 12 kills, her 10th match with double-digit kills in her rookie campaign. She had five in the second set, including a pair late in the frame to pull the Mean Green within two, but Rice used another late push to hold off UNT.
The Mean Green averaged a season-high 23 digs per set in the loss, led by a season-high 16 for Teakell. Karley York registered her 10th double-double of the season with 26 assists and 14 digs, and Valerie Valerian also finished in double-digits with 11 digs.
