UNT Ties For Best Final Round In Dallas
10/30/2018 2:26:00 PM | Women's Golf
DALLAS – Led by the tandem of junior Lauren Cox and freshman Patricia Sinolungan, the UNT women's golf team tied for the best round of the day at the Trinity Forest Invitational, wrapping up its fall schedule at Trinity Forest Golf Club on Tuesday.
The Mean Green shot an 8-over-par 296, which tied with No. 25 Oregon State for the best round of the day, and finished the tournament in eighth place – one shot back of defending Conference USA champion Texas-San Antonio and No. 58 Kansas. The field featured seven teams in the top 60 nationally.
"We are very excited to shoot the low round of the day today and end the fall on a positive note," UNT coach Michael Akers said. "We are certainly showing signs of great progress, and it is obvious the program is gaining momentum. Today was a day we had four solid scores."
Cox and Sinolungan shot identical rounds for the third straight time in the tournament, as they finished tied for 16th in the field at 8-over par.
The key to Tuesday's success was the well-rounded team effort, as four golfers shot within three strokes of par, led by senior Sabina Pena's 73, while Cox and Sinolungan shot 74, followed by freshman Audrey Tan's 75.
The Mean Green will now hit the offseason before resuming play on Feb. 25-26 at The Dickson in The Woodlands, Texas.
"As we look toward the offseason, we know we need to work on depth," Akers said. "We have relied heavily on two 17-year-old freshmen, and they have done a great job. The sky is the limit for them, but this fall has been a learning experience. Sabina and Lauren have been steady for us. We look for Sol and Claire to improve over the break and come out strong in the spring.
"We are right where we want to be moving halfway through the year and 2 1/2 years into this rebuilding job," Akers added. "I am very excited about the future."
