SAN MARCOS, TX – In the final fall tournament for North Texas women's golf, the Mean Green finished third out of 11 teams on the back of a collective eleven under par during the second round of Texas State's Jim West Challenge.
The dominant second round by UNT was the second-best team round of any school in the field and was led by freshman Siena Neto's five under par. The freshman's second 18 holes was the best individual round by a Mean Green golfer and tied for the sixth best single round overall. For the whole tournament, Nieto was even after shooting 216 across three rounds (78-67-71).
Where Nieto was able to anchor her team for a round, sophomore Marin Fujiyasu provided a consistent presence across all three rounds. The Hiroshima, Japan native posted a combined seven under par (69-71-69-209) at the Challenge and finished fourth on the individual leaderboard.
Senior teammate Bouquet Subsonboon joined Fujiyasu in the top ten, tying for eighth after finishing three under par (72-70-71-213).
Sophomore Victoria Georgieva and junior Reicherin Hanslkie each aided in the outing, with the former opening with her best round of one over par (73-74-75-222) while the latter made her mark during round two, going for three under (80-69-74-223).
As a team, the Mean Green were particularly strong in the closing holes, combining for 13 birdies and one eagle over the final five holes. The effort propelled them past 41st ranked UNLV and was within two strokes of tying No. 36 Missouri for second.
With the fall slate of tournaments complete, UNT is off until the end of January when the team opens the spring season in Punta Cana at the Dominican Republic Classic hosted by Purdue from January 31-February 2. The classic is the first of five outings leading up to the American Conference Championship in Florida at the end of April.
