ARDMORE, Oklahoma - The Mean Green opened their season Friday with a strong performance in winning the Duel at Dornick over Murray State, 5-0. North Texas took on the Racers at Dornick Hills Golf and Country Club to simulate the conditions for their first tournament site of the season, when they head to the Minnesota Invitational at Prestwick Golf Club in Woodbury, Minnesota.
"The match proved to be exactly what we needed," head coach Michael Akers said. "It was a great dress rehearsal for our trip to Minnesota next weekend. The course is very challenging and the bent grass greens were a great warmup."
Sophomore newcomer Claire Cameron won her match 8&6 over Makenzie Rogers, while senior Sol Lee won her match 3&2 over Paige Clinton. Fellow senior Sabina Pena also knocked off her opponent, Rian Moores 3&2. A pair of freshmen made their Mean Green debuts in victorious fashion as well, as Patty Sinalungan defeated Kitana Hollins 4&3 and Audrey Tan knocked off Brooke Irion 4&2.
"It was great to compete and we appreciate Murray State for setting up the match," Akers continued. With four new players it is vital that Krista [Puisite] and I learn their games as quickly as possible. We look forward to traveling to Minnesota and building off today's performances."
North Texas travels to Woodbury to play in the Minnesota Invitational from Sept. 10-11.
